Royal Navy officer training
My son who is 17 is studying for his A levels at the moment but been conditionally accepted into naval officer training
I have no idea what this involves as never considered the forces myself and not really sure how I feel about my son joining up,he is very academic and driven so I am really proud of him whatever he chooses to do.
Anyone got any kids in the forces etc.... Or served themselves?

My cousin is still a serving army officer but attached to US forces at the moment.

His daughter started officer training couple of year ago and still loves it.

I work in engineering, and I can honestly tell you that we try to recruit ex-naval engineers wherever possible. The training, discipline and experience will make you employable for your whole life virtually anywhere in the world.

If I could change one thing in my life it would be to have joined the navy and not gone to uni.

I did seven years in the Army, left in 2007.Although I had a great time in the Army I often think I might have enjoyed Navy life better and was very tempted up until September to join. I never worked with the Navy whilst I was in but I did work with the RAF and it appeared that they got looked after better than us.

You certainly have the altitude.

My daughter was in the sea cadets. Every other weekend away on ships etc and they had courses equivalent to Btec at just the age of 12 and was allowed school leave to do them. Army, navy and Air Force best apprentership in the world, whatever you decide to do after. Best thing you could have on your c.v IMO.

An old mate of mine was struggling in his early 20s as he was an only child and his Dad passed away, he had trouble at university so dropped out and to cut a long story short, joined the Navy.

He did 2 or 3 years and was involved in waving the signs etc to help helicopters land on the big destroyers. They trained him up and from what he said they had great times on shore leave in Cuba and the likes banging hookers and drinking rum and a bit of charlie.

Is he a sea cadet? That might give him a taste of military life that is more realistic than recruitment videos.
I was an air cadet and learnt enough to never want to join up for real.

My mate just described it is 'getting paid to travel the world having a laugh with your mates while learning a trade'

Good career choice for a young lad I know people in the navy and they love it. They love it when they leave with a trade too. Might be worth looking on arrse.co.uk

My uncle who died this year unexpectedly (and was gay) was in the Navy for 30 odd years. He pretty much went to every country in the world, had an amazing life and one of my cousins children join a couple of years ago and is doing okay.

My uncle said back in the day a lot of gay men did join the navy precisely because they could get on with their lives at time (when he joined up) it was illegal back home.

I remember asking him in reality what sort of percentage of the men he served with were actually gay his response was "that all depended how far from Port we were!" Bless him.

I say go for it, what a great career.
